Non-Toxic Inks for Eco-Friendly Packaging

Non-Toxic Inks for Eco-Friendly Packaging

In the world of printing, the type of ink you choose can have a significant impact on the environment. Traditional oil-based inks, derived from petroleum, are known for their toxicity due to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are harmful chemicals that evaporate into the air, contributing to air pollution and posing health risks.

Fortunately, there are more sustainable alternatives available. Water-based, algae-based, and soy-based inks all use non-petroleum components as their main carriers, reducing the environmental footprint.

However, it's not just the carrier that matters; the type of pigment used can also affect the toxicity of the ink. Pigments that contain heavy metals like cadmium can make any ink toxic, regardless of whether it's water, soy, or algae-based.

Inks are typically made with a polymer, usually acrylic or polyurethane (PU). This polymer gives the ink its essential properties such as consistency, adhesion, lightfastness, and scratch resistance.

For our products, we prioritize safety and sustainability by exclusively using non-toxic inks that have passed ROHS and REACH certifications. While these inks are not certified as biodegradable or compostable, they do not hinder compostability when used within specified limits.

When it comes to recycling, it's generally best to use less color, but modern recycling facilities have made significant strides in handling colorful packaging effectively. Enhanced washing processes have also been developed to more effectively remove inks and contaminants from recyclable materials. Additionally, the use of advanced deinking methods, including flotation deinking and enzymatic treatments, helps to strip inks from paper and plastic, making the materials easier to recycle.

We offer a variety of ink options tailored to the type of artwork our customers require. The choice of ink is influenced by the artwork's needs and not necessarily the printing method. Each type of ink has its own limitations and performance characteristics, so selecting the right one is crucial for achieving the desired result.

By choosing sustainable inks, we can reduce our environmental impact and promote healthier practices in the printing industry.
